Where it came from
Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria United. The character was designed to emphasize the mechanics of copying spells targeting a single creature, reflecting her identity as an inhabitant of the forest who playfully mimics the magic she encounters. The card was specifically released as a foil promo variant, a tradition within the game to offer collectors alternative, aesthetically distinct versions of standard set cards through organized play events or specialized product bundles.
The artwork for this card was commissioned from illustrator Ekaterina Burmak, known for her vibrant, character-focused fantasy depictions. Burmak’s design for Ivy centers on a whimsical yet grounded portrayal of a forest spirit, utilizing a color palette that aligns with the card’s color identity. Upon its release, the card gained significant attention in the Commander format, where players praised its unique ability to double the value of targeting spells, solidifying its place as both a functional tool for deck builders and a sought-after piece for foil card collectors.
