Where it came from
Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion Dominaria United. The card represents a key character within the set's narrative, set on the plane of Dominaria, which serves as a nostalgic touchstone for long-term players due to its deep historical roots in the game's lore. As a legendary creature, Ivy was designed to function as a commander, specifically rewarding players for utilizing cards that target their own creatures with beneficial effects.
The character design and card illustration were executed by artist Alayna Danner. Her work captures the ethereal, forest-dwelling essence of the creature, leaning into the vibrant, magical aesthetic common to the set’s Simic-aligned themes. The design intentionally bridges the gap between mechanical utility and thematic flavor, positioning the character as a playful yet potent spellcaster. Upon its release, the card gained significant traction within the Commander format for its unique ability to copy spells, securing its place as a popular choice for deck builders focusing on targeting synergies.
