Where it came from
Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief was introduced as part of the Dominaria United set in 2022, serving as a focal point for the set's emphasis on multicolored legends and complex stack interactions. The character is portrayed as an alluring yet trickster-like faerie, designed to encourage players to build decks centered around targeting their own permanents. The card was specifically released as a promo variant to celebrate the set's return to the plane of Dominaria, a nostalgic milestone for the Magic: The Gathering franchise.
The artwork for this specific promo version highlights the character's mischievous nature, utilizing the vibrant, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of modern Magic card illustrations. This promo variant uses a unique foil treatment and frame design intended to distinguish it from the standard set release, catering to collectors who value aesthetic variety. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the Commander format community, where its unique ability to copy spells targeting both players and creatures made it an immediate favorite for build-around strategies.
