Where it came from
Ixidor's Will was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a pivotal moment in the set's narrative, centering on the character Ixidor, a powerful illusionist whose descent into grief and madness serves as the primary conflict of the Otaria storyline. The design reflects the set's mechanical focus on morph and enchantment interactions, translating Ixidor's reality-warping abilities into game mechanics.
The artwork was illustrated by Greg Staples, who was tasked with capturing the tragic and ethereal essence of the character. Staples utilized a dark, atmospheric color palette to emphasize the psychological weight behind the illusionist's desperation. Upon release, the card was noted for its technical contribution to blue-aligned control decks, where it functioned as a utility piece that complemented the unique morph-centric landscape of the Onslaught block.
