Where it came from
Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The set marked a return to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on themes of eternal night and the struggle against encroaching darkness. Jadar was designed as a legendary creature representing the necro-alchemical traditions of the Nephalia region, tasked with maintaining a steady supply of undead minions for the local elite.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who rendered Jadar with a cold, detached precision that emphasizes his role as a ritualist rather than a warrior. The promo version, marked with collector number 108p, features the distinct frame treatments typical of Midnight Hunt's promotional releases. The card was well-received by players for its efficient generation of decayed zombie tokens, providing a unique utility that favored sacrifice-themed deck strategies in the Commander format.
