Jade Monolith

Jade Monolith was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Fourth Edition as card number 329. Designed as a rare artifact, the card was intended to provide a defensive utility that allowed players to redirect damage dealt to themselves toward the monolith instead, albeit at the cost of life. This reflected the game's early design philosophy of creating high-risk, high-reward artifacts that could alter the flow of combat.

The artwork for the card was provided by Quinton Hoover, a prolific early contributor to the game's visual identity. Hoover's style, often characterized by fluid lines and a distinct, painterly approach to fantasy iconography, helped define the aesthetic of the early sets. While the card is not considered a competitive staple in modern formats, it remains a notable piece of Magic history for its unique mechanical function and its representation of the game's foundational period.
