Jade Monolith

Jade Monolith was originally introduced in the Alpha expansion set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the game's early exploration of artifact utility. It was later reprinted in the Classic Sixth Edition in 1999, which marked a significant turning point for the game's rule set, introducing the 'stack' and clarifying many of the complex interactions that had plagued early gameplay. This reprint allowed new players to experience a classic card design while fitting into the updated technical framework of the late nineties.

The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, one of the most recognizable artists from the early era of Magic. Hoover’s style was defined by flowing lines and an ethereal, often whimsical aesthetic that brought a sense of fantasy and mystery to the game's artifacts. The Jade Monolith depicts a singular, imposing stone structure, a design choice intended to convey durability and the redirection of damage, themes consistent with the card's function of absorbing harm at a cost.
