Where it came from
The Jund plane card was released in 2012 as part of the Planechase 2012 expansion, a set designed to revitalize the multiplayer format by introducing planar travel mechanics. This specific card represents Jund, a plane from the Alara block characterized by a brutal, primordial ecosystem where only the strongest predators survive. The design reflects the plane's chaotic essence, forcing players to navigate its predatory environment through mechanics that benefit aggressive, creature-heavy strategies.
The art for this card, illustrated by Steve Argyle, captures the volatile and volcanic landscape of the plane. Argyle leaned into the saturated, fiery aesthetic synonymous with the Shard of Jund, emphasizing the sharp, jagged terrain and the oppressive atmosphere that defines the region. Upon its release, the card was well-received by fans of the format for its ability to heighten the intensity of games, effectively translating the plane’s unforgiving narrative into a tangible gameplay experience.
