Where it came from
Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer was introduced in the 2019 Commander set, specifically as the face commander for the 'Faceless Menace' deck. Wizards of the Coast designed this card to serve as a high-synergy centerpiece for the morph mechanic, a complex game feature that allows cards to be played face-down. By reducing the mana cost of these creatures and providing card advantage, Kadena was intended to turn a previously niche, underutilized mechanic into a viable and exciting strategy for multi-player Commander formats.
The artwork for Kadena was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the character with a serpentine, mysterious aesthetic that aligns with the card's theme of deception and hidden information. The design was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community, who praised the card for making the morph archetype feel cohesive and strategic. It remains a staple in the format for players looking to leverage hidden information and tactical surprise during gameplay.
