Where it came from
Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer was introduced in the 2019 Commander expansion, a set specifically designed for the multiplayer Magic: The Gathering format. As a legendary creature from the Faceless Menace deck, it was engineered to anchor a strategy revolving around the morph mechanic, which allows players to cast creatures face-down as generic 2/2 tokens. The character itself draws from the lore of the plane of Ixalan, representing a naga shaman whose abilities emphasize deception and resource advantage.
The oversized card variant was produced as a promotional accessory included within the Commander 2019 boxed set, intended to represent the commander in the command zone during gameplay. The illustration, created by artist Magali Villeneuve, captures Kadena’s serpentine, sinister aesthetic through fluid lines and a muted, atmospheric color palette. The card was well-received by players for its thematic focus on morph mechanics, offering a unique playstyle that rewarded careful timing and psychological manipulation of opponents.
