Soul Foundry

Soul Foundry was originally introduced in the Mirrodin expansion in 2003, designed as an artifact that allows players to imprint a creature card and create token copies of it. The card reflects the mechanical focus of the Mirrodin set, which leaned heavily into artifact-based synergy and the concept of mechanical replication. By the time it was reprinted for Commander 2019, the card had secured a reputation as a powerful engine in multiplayer formats, favored by players who enjoy high-cost, high-reward utility artifacts that can snowball if left unchecked on the battlefield.

The original illustration by Arnie Swekel captures the industrial, metallic aesthetic typical of the plane of Mirrodin, emphasizing the cold, manufactured nature of the process. In the Commander 2019 reprint, the design remains true to its functional roots, serving as a staple utility piece within green-white 'Tokens' archetypes. Its design was intended to balance the significant mana investment required to play and activate the card against the recurring advantage of creating creature copies, a design philosophy that remains consistent across its various printings.
