Where it came from
Kardur, Doomscourge was released in 2021 as part of the Starter Commander Decks, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to provide accessible, ready-to-play entry points for the Commander format. The character originates from the plane of Kaldheim, a setting heavily inspired by Norse mythology, and was introduced as a legendary creature meant to embody the chaotic and aggressive themes of the Rakdos color identity in Magic: The Gathering.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a bold, visceral style to depict Kardur’s status as a war-bringer who thrives on the conflict of others. Mechanically, the card was designed to force opponents to attack creatures other than its controller, a unique 'goad' effect that has since become a hallmark of multiplayer politics. It was well-received by players for providing an efficient and thematic commander option for decks focused on incentivizing combat between adversaries.
