Provenance

Where it came from

Karma was released as part of the Unlimited Edition set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1993. It was designed during the game's infancy by Richard Garfield, intended to serve as a strategic hate card against decks utilizing black mana by punishing the player for each Swamp they controlled. The card was carried over from the earlier Limited Edition Alpha and Beta releases, which established the foundational mechanics of the game as a complex, resource-driven dueling system.

The illustrative work for the card was created by artist Dan Frazier, whose distinctively fluid and somewhat surreal style defined many of the early game's iconic cards. Frazier's depiction of a spectral, cloaked figure surrounded by swirling energy was intended to evoke the psychological and ethereal toll of negative reinforcement. Upon its release, Karma was recognized by players as a highly situational yet effective tool for white decks, solidifying its place in the early meta-game landscape.
