Kharasha Foothills

Kharasha Foothills was released in 2012 as part of the Planechase 2012 set, an expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game designed to introduce a multiplayer format where players traverse different 'planes' of existence. As a plane card, it functions as a global enchantment rather than a standard spell, meant to represent the rugged, dangerous terrain of the Grixis shard from the Alara setting. Its mechanics are designed to disrupt gameplay by forcing players to discard cards when they encounter the location, emphasizing the harsh and unforgiving nature of its environment.

The card features illustration by artist Mike Bierek, whose work was commissioned to capture the dark, desolate aesthetic characteristic of the Grixis landscape. Bierek focused on creating a sense of scale and oppressive atmosphere, utilizing a palette that reflects the necrotic and drained magic associated with this part of the multiverse. The card was well-received within the casual Magic community for successfully translating the lore of the Alara block into the dynamic, chaotic Planechase format, providing a thematic anchor for players navigating the game's expansive narrative world.
