Where it came from
Khod, Etlan Shiis Envoy originated as a 'playtest' card included in the 2019 Mystery Booster set released by Wizards of the Coast for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were designed to mimic the aesthetic of early internal development prototypes, featuring stark, minimalist layouts and paper-like text boxes. They were intentionally inserted into booster packs as a novelty, offering players a glimpse into the whimsical, often experimental mechanics that typically never reach formal print production.
The design of this specific card is attributed to the Magic: The Gathering R&D team, who adopted a 'playtest' visual identity characterized by bold headers and sparse, handwritten-style typography. By stripping away traditional set symbols and elaborate illustrations, the design emphasizes the card's function as a mechanical proof-of-concept. It was received by the community as a prized collector's curio, celebrated for its tongue-in-cheek nod to the chaotic, unpolished phase of game development.
