Mana Short

Mana Short was introduced as a blue instant in the original Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Unlimited Edition with the same iconic artwork. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was part of the game's foundational mechanics, intended to capture the volatile and disruptive nature of blue magic by forcing an opponent to empty their mana pool, potentially ruining their planned plays for the turn.

The card features artwork by Sandra Everingham, whose illustrative style helped define the aesthetic of early Magic sets. Her work on the card reflects the high-fantasy tone of the era, focusing on the visual representation of mana energy being drained or dissipated. While the card has seen varying levels of competitive utility over the decades, it remains a notable piece of early game design that showcases the direct, impactful spells characteristic of the game's initial release.
