Where it came from
Lance was released as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in October 1993. As one of the early expansions intended to increase the print run of the original Alpha set, Beta introduced corrected rules text and improved card stock. The set was designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast to satisfy the explosive demand for the game following its initial launch earlier that year.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and recognizable illustrators of the early game. The design reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic established by the Magic art direction team, which sought to create a distinct visual identity through dark, detailed, and often gritty illustrations. While Lance itself is a relatively simple enchantment card, its inclusion in the Beta set solidified its role in the early ecosystem of deck building, where it was primarily used to grant power-boosting abilities to creatures.
