Lance

Lance was released in 1994 as part of the Revised Edition, the third core set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was expanding the game's reach, moving away from the limited print runs of the Alpha and Beta sets to meet surging player demand. As a basic green enchantment, it reflected the game's early mechanical focus on creature augmentation, providing a simple buff to power and toughness.

The card features an illustration by Dan Frazier, one of the original artists who defined the aesthetic of the early game. His work on the Revised Edition helped establish a consistent visual language for the fantasy setting, prioritizing clarity and thematic alignment with the game's mana-based systems. While the card is often viewed as a piece of early-game ephemera, it serves as a representative example of the functional, understated design style that characterized the transition from the game's experimental origins to its established identity.
