Where it came from
Lance, card number 28 in the Pokémon Trading Card Game's Unlimited Edition, features the powerful Dragon-type trainer who serves as the final member of the Elite Four in the Kanto region. Originally introduced in the 1998 Gym Heroes expansion, the card depicts Lance in his iconic cape, reflecting his status as a formidable dragon master within the franchise's lore. The artwork emphasizes his authoritative presence, aligning with his established character arc as a guardian of dragon-type Pokémon.
The card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and art director for the Pokémon series. Sugimori's signature watercolor-influenced style provides a sense of classic aesthetic consistency that defines the early generations of the TCG. Upon its release, the card was received as a sought-after staple for players looking to incorporate high-tier trainer support, cementing its place in the history of competitive play during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
