Where it came from
Land's Edge was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was notable for being the first expansion designed by players and fans of the game, rather than solely by internal Wizards of the Coast staff, aiming to introduce more complex mechanics and high-impact enchantments to the evolving game environment.
The card was illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, a prominent artist during the early years of the game. Her work on Land's Edge leaned into the gothic and fantastical aesthetic characteristic of the mid-90s, focusing on the literal interpretation of the card's effect: allowing players to discard land cards to deal damage to opponents. The design was received as a niche tactical tool, often categorized by players as a classic 'build-around' card that incentivized aggressive discard strategies.
