Where it came from
Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter was released as part of The Brothers' War expansion in 2022, capturing a pivotal moment in Magic: The Gathering lore. The card depicts a classic artifact creature central to the conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra, designed to reflect the technological innovation and desperation of the era. Its inclusion in the set was intended to evoke a sense of high-stakes historical struggle within the game's long-running narrative.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who crafted the battlethopter to look sleek yet functional, emphasizing its role as a weapon of war. Released as a special promo variant, the piece was received well by players who appreciated the metallic, industrial aesthetic that defines the retro-futuristic style of the set. It remains a notable example of modern card illustration that pays homage to the game's deep historical roots.
