Where it came from
Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter was released as part of The Brothers' War expansion in 2022, capturing the high-stakes mechanical conflict between Urza and Mishra that serves as the foundation of Magic: The Gathering lore. The card reflects the desperate ingenuity of the era, where massive artifice replaced traditional warfare. As a promo iteration, this specific version features unique styling designed to highlight its role as a pivotal war machine in the mythos.
The design of the card leans into the 'retro artifact' aesthetic that Wizards of the Coast utilized for this set to evoke a sense of ancient history. Illustrators for this series focused on industrial, utilitarian forms that emphasize the cold efficiency of Urza’s creations. It was well-received by players for its ability to flash artifacts into play, a mechanic that mirrors the rapid, reactive engineering of the Brothers' War storyline.
