Where it came from
Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War. The card depicts a mechanical aircraft central to the lore of the conflict between Urza and Mishra, representing the rapid technological escalation that defined the war. Mechanically, the card was designed to highlight the set's focus on artifacts and flash-based gameplay, allowing players to cast spells at instant speed to mirror the frantic, shifting nature of the battle depicted in the source material.
The illustration was created by artist Livia Prima, who rendered the battlethopter with a sleek, industrial aesthetic that aligns with the set's retro-futuristic theme. Prima aimed to capture the machine's role as a swift, agile weapon of war, emphasizing its metallic sheen and compact, aerodynamic frame. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in Commander and other eternal formats, where its ability to grant flash to colorless spells provides significant strategic flexibility.
