Where it came from
Sibling Rivalry was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Brothers' War. The card depicts a climactic confrontation between Urza and Mishra, the two central figures of the set’s namesake conflict, which serves as a foundational mythos for the game's long-running storyline. Mechanically and thematically, the card explores the volatile partnership and inevitable betrayal between the brothers, reflecting the set's focus on historical artifacts and massive war machines.
The artwork was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a dramatic, sweeping composition to emphasize the intensity of the struggle. Voss intended to capture the raw emotional and physical power inherent in the sibling conflict, drawing upon the lore-heavy aesthetic established for the set. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful interpretation of the brothers' dynamic, effectively translating decades of established fantasy narrative into a functional, thematic gameplay piece.
