Where it came from
Liliana, the Last Hope was originally released as a Planeswalker card in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering set Eldritch Moon. This specific iteration, part of the Guilds of Ravnica Mythic Edition released in 2018, features premium 'Masterpiece' style foil treatment and unique borderless artwork. These editions were designed by Wizards of the Coast to offer high-end, visually distinct versions of iconic cards for serious collectors, focusing on a more sophisticated aesthetic than standard booster pack variants.
The character art for this version was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-standing contributor to the game known for his expressive, atmospheric fantasy style. Voss aimed to capture Liliana Vess in a moment of stoic power, leaning into her role as a necromancer and key figure in the game's evolving narrative arc. Upon release, the card was received warmly by the player base, particularly for its refined visual departure from the base set’s illustrative style, establishing it as a centerpiece for players who appreciate specialized artistic interpretations of established lore characters.
