Provenance

Where it came from

Living Artifact was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, published by Wizards of the Coast. Designed by Richard Garfield, the set served as a successor to the initial Limited Edition Alpha, refining the rules and correcting printing errors from the game's debut run. It emerged during the early 1990s as part of the burgeoning hobby gaming industry, introducing the concept of collectible card games that would fundamentally change tabletop gaming.

The artwork for Living Artifact was created by artist Anson Maddocks. Known for his distinctive, often organic and surreal style in the game's earliest years, Maddocks aimed to visualize the concept of an inanimate object imbued with sentient, vegetative life. The card represents the set's early aesthetic, which emphasized high-fantasy illustrations often characterized by hand-drawn, gritty details that became iconic markers of the game's foundational period.
