Provenance

Where it came from

Stone Rain was released as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering in October 1993. As the game’s second print run, Beta aimed to expand upon the initial Limited Edition Alpha release by refining the card layout and correcting minor printing errors while maintaining the iconic art style that defined early fantasy card games of the 1990s.

The card features an illustration by Dameon Willich, who contributed numerous pieces to the early game. His design for Stone Rain visually captures the destructive essence of land-focused resource denial, a mechanic that became a hallmark of red-aligned spells. Upon its release, the card was well-received by early players for its efficiency, quickly establishing itself as a cornerstone of land destruction strategies in competitive play.
