Provenance

Where it came from

Scrubland was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering, the world's first trading card game. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card belongs to the 'Dual Land' cycle, a group of ten rare cards designed to provide mana versatility by tapping for two different colors. These lands were intended to solve mana consistency issues for early players, quickly becoming fundamental staples in competitive deck construction.

The artwork for Scrubland was created by Sandra Everingham, who contributed several pieces to the early sets of the game. Her illustration style for this card features a muted, painterly landscape that emphasizes the desolate yet functional nature of the terrain. Upon release, the card was immediately recognized by the player base as exceptionally powerful, a status it has maintained due to its scarcity and its inclusion on the Reserved List, which prevents Wizards of the Coast from reprinting the card in its original form.
