Where it came from
Lord of Atlantis first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later becoming a staple of the Revised Edition released in 1994. Designed as a cornerstone of the Merfolk creature type, the card was created to provide a powerful lord effect that granted both a power and toughness boost as well as islandwalk to all Merfolk on the battlefield, effectively defining the mechanical identity of blue tribal decks for years to come.
The artwork was illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, a prominent contributor during the game's formative years. Her depiction captures a stoic, regal figure reflecting the high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent in early trading card design. While the card's mechanics have been updated and refined in later sets, the Revised Edition version remains a touchstone for collectors who appreciate the minimalist framing and unique visual style of the game's earliest printings.
