Swamp

The Swamp card from the 1994 Revised Edition, identified as card number 299, serves as a fundamental component of Magic: The Gathering. As the third core set release, Revised was designed to provide a more accessible entry point for new players while addressing errata and balancing issues found in the limited print runs of the Alpha and Beta editions. These basic lands were printed in vast quantities to ensure they were readily available for deck construction, anchoring the game's core resource system.

The visual identity of this card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and influential artists in the game's early history. His interpretation of the swamp habitat—defined by its dark, moody atmosphere and distinctive skeletal flora—was intended to evoke the gothic fantasy aesthetic that defined the game’s initial creative direction. While these cards were common and lacked the scarcity of rare artifacts or spells, they remain highly regarded by collectors for their historical significance and the nostalgic appeal of Rush's signature illustration style.
