Where it came from
Magic Word was released in 2020 as part of the Unsanctioned boxed set, a standalone product for Magic: The Gathering designed for casual, silver-bordered play. As part of the 'Un-' series, the card was created to subvert the traditional rules and mechanics of the game, encouraging a lighthearted atmosphere where physical actions and verbal interactions take precedence over rigid card text.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, an iconic illustrator whose contributions defined the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering during its formative years. His design for the card focuses on the literal interpretation of its namesake, fitting into the set's broader goal of exploring metagame humor. Upon its release, the card was received by the player base as a quintessential example of the series' unconventional approach to gameplay design.
