Plains

The Plains card from the 2020 Unsanctioned set represents the pinnacle of Magic: The Gathering's 'Un-' series, a line of expansions intentionally designed for casual, humorous, and unconventional play. This specific card was crafted to showcase the series' signature full-art aesthetic, which prioritizes expansive, whimsical landscapes over the standard technical layouts found in competitive sets. The set was conceived as a standalone draft experience, meant to be played straight out of the box with five pre-constructed decks that feature cards which frequently bend or break the traditional rules of the game.

The visual identity of this Plains card was shaped by the creative team at Wizards of the Coast, who leveraged the 'Unsanctioned' platform to push the boundaries of card art. By utilizing a full-bleed art frame, the design emphasizes vibrant, saturated landscapes that evoke a sense of surrealism and playfulness consistent with the set's silver-bordered theme. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors and casual players alike, who valued it as a visually distinct piece of gaming history that stands in stark contrast to the utilitarian design of standard-legal basic lands.
