Where it came from
Ovinize was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed around the concept of an alternate reality where the color pie of the game was shifted, allowing mechanics usually reserved for one color to manifest in another. Ovinize, a blue card, functions as a classic transformation spell that turns a creature into a sheep, echoing the polymorphing effects historically associated with green or white magic.
The artwork for Ovinize was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who utilized a whimsical yet slightly unsettling aesthetic to capture the sudden physical transformation described by the card's mechanics. The piece was well-received for its clear visual storytelling and its adherence to the set's theme of planar instability, becoming a recognizable example of early 21st-century card design that prioritized flavor and thematic depth.
