Provenance

Where it came from

Mana Flare was released as part of the Limited Edition Beta set in 1993, representing the second printing of the original Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a desire to create a fast-paced, portable hobby that could be played between rounds of other tabletop games. The Beta set was printed shortly after the initial Alpha run to meet overwhelming demand and corrected several minor inconsistencies from the first release.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Dan Frazier, whose work is iconic for defining the early aesthetic of Magic: The Gathering. Frazier utilized a distinct, minimalist style that focused on the raw elemental energy of the card’s effect, which allows players to gain double mana from tapping lands. The design was received as a powerful and volatile tool, quickly becoming a staple in red-aligned decks for its ability to drastically accelerate the pace of a match.
