Where it came from
Mana Flare was originally released as part of the Alpha set in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to introduce a symmetrical resource acceleration mechanic to the early Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. The card’s illustration, created by artist Mark Poole, captures a classic high-fantasy aesthetic that defines the game's foundational era, depicting a stylized burst of magical energy that embodies the chaotic nature of red-aligned mana.
The Collectors' Edition version of this card was released in 1993 as a non-tournament legal set intended for collectors and casual players. These cards are distinguished by their square corners and gold-bordered backs, serving as a prestige reprint of the original game cards. While they were not intended for professional play, they have since become highly sought after for their historical role in documenting the visual evolution of the game’s first year.
