Where it came from
Manabond was originally introduced in the 1997 Magic: The Gathering expansion Exodus, designed to encourage a high-risk, high-reward strategy that challenged standard resource management conventions. The card allows players to dump lands from their hand onto the battlefield, provided they sacrifice their ability to play lands normally, a design choice intended to reward players for emptying their hands into powerful late-game board states. The artwork by Matthew D. Wilson encapsulates the chaotic, verdant energy of the card's mechanics, utilizing a bold, illustrative style characteristic of late 90s fantasy gaming aesthetics.
This version of Manabond appears in the 2024 Mystery Booster 2 set, which serves as a curated retrospective of Magic: The Gathering history. The set features a unique 'white-border' aesthetic treatment designed to mimic the vintage feel of early core sets while updating the card frames for modern readability. By including Manabond in this collection, the developers sought to provide players with an accessible way to acquire a classic, niche utility card that has seen consistent interest in formats like Commander due to its ability to accelerate land-based strategies.
