Where it came from
Night of the Flying Merfolk was released in 2024 as part of Mystery Booster 2, a product designed by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering through a curated selection of reprints and unique, playtest-style cards. These cards are often characterized by their experimental mechanics, humorous flavor, or call-backs to community-driven memes and inside jokes within the game's long history.
The card features artwork and design elements consistent with the playful, meta-fictional tone established by the Mystery Booster series. It serves as an example of the design philosophy that prioritizes creative exploration and the celebration of the game's evolution over strict competitive balance, offering players a nostalgic and often whimsical look at what a trading card game can accomplish outside of the standard regulatory environment.
