Where it came from
Martyr's Bond was originally printed in the 2008 set Shards of Alara, representing the white-aligned plane of Bant. Its design reflects the plane's emphasis on communal duty and the protection of one's allies, mechanically punishing opponents who seek to destroy a player's permanents. The card serves as a thematic manifestation of the intricate social hierarchies and knightly vows that defined the aesthetic of that specific world.
The Signature Spellbook: Gideon version, released in 2019, was curated by Wizards of the Coast to highlight the character Gideon Jura. As a Planeswalker central to the narrative, his collection was designed to feature cards that emphasize protection, sacrifice, and combat prowess. This reprint utilizes a unique border and specific art direction consistent with the Signature Spellbook series, which sought to package iconic and thematic cards into a cohesive aesthetic set for fans of the Planeswalker character.
