Where it came from
Blackblade Reforged was first introduced in the Dominaria set in 2018, representing the legendary sword once wielded by the Elder Dragon Dakkon Blackblade. This particular version appeared in the 2019 release Signature Spellbook: Gideon, a curated product designed to spotlight the iconic Planeswalker Gideon Jura. The card’s inclusion in this collection serves as a narrative bridge to the character’s final arc, reflecting the weapon’s significant role in the lore of the multiverse.
The art for this specific printing was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, who sought to capture the sword’s immense scale and ominous, necrotic power. By depicting the blade as a massive, dark instrument of war, the design emphasizes its ability to scale in power based on the strength of the creature wielding it. The aesthetic aligns with the polished, high-fantasy style established for the Signature Spellbook series, which aimed to provide players with visually distinct versions of cards deeply thematic to Gideon’s journey.
