Where it came from
Willbender was originally released as a rare card in the 2002 Legions expansion, designed as part of the morph mechanic that allowed players to cast creatures face-down as colorless 2/2s. The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a dark, fluid aesthetic to capture the essence of a shapeshifting illusionist capable of redirecting spells or abilities, a utility that earned it a lasting reputation for tactical unpredictability in competitive formats.
The 2014 Duel Decks: Speed vs. Cunning re-release brought the card back into the spotlight as part of a thematic structure contrasting aggressive creatures with tricky, reactive spells. By placing Willbender in the Cunning deck, Wizards of the Coast highlighted the card's enduring legacy as a quintessential blue utility creature, reinforcing its role as a disruptive element that rewards players for keeping mana open during an opponent's turn.
