Where it came from
Mastermind's Acquisition was introduced in the 2018 expansion set Rivals of Ixalan for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card was designed as a rare sorcery that allows players to search their library or their sideboard for a card, reflecting the theme of tactical manipulation and resource gathering central to the set's pirate and exploration narrative.
The artwork for this specific promotional version, numbered 77s, features the distinct, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Ixalan block. It was released as a promotional item, often distributed through Magic: The Gathering store-level events to incentivize organized play. The design was received by the competitive community as a versatile utility card, favored for its ability to pull specific silver-bullet answers from outside the main deck.
