Where it came from
Mathemagics was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card within the Mystical Archive, it serves as a thematic tribute to the Prismari College, the Strixhaven faction defined by the intersection of performance art and elemental magic. The design utilizes the unique Japanese-inspired art style developed for this subset, focusing on an aesthetic of scholarly elegance combined with the explosive visual energy associated with the college's focus on instant and sorcery spells.
The card was illustrated by the artist Ryohei Hase, who brought a distinct, stylized interpretation to the spell. The design process for the Mystical Archive was intended to offer a stylistic departure from traditional Magic art, emphasizing the storied history of the university's library. Upon release, the card and the broader series were received warmly by the player base for their visual cohesion and the way they successfully captured the academy-themed identity of the set.
