Where it came from
Mathemagics is part of the Secrets of Strixhaven Art Series, a promotional set released in 2021 to accompany the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Strixhaven: School of Mages. These cards were designed to highlight the unique aesthetics of the plane of Arcavios, featuring full-art illustrations without the game text found on standard playing cards, intended specifically for collectors and fans of the game's high-fantasy art direction.
The illustration for this piece was crafted by the artist Matt Stewart, who sought to capture the core identity of the Quandrix college—the school of mathematics and nature within the university. The design focuses on the intricate, geometric motifs and fractal imagery synonymous with the college's focus on theoretical magic, resulting in a composition that balances rigid mathematical precision with the organic growth of the natural world.
