Provenance

Where it came from

Megrim was first introduced in the Stronghold expansion in 1998, designed as a black enchantment that punishes opponents whenever they discard cards. Its mechanics solidified its place as a staple for discard-focused control decks, forcing players to carefully balance their resources against the threat of losing life. The design reflects the brutal, attrition-based nature of black-aligned magic in the game's early years, turning an opponent's necessary resource management into a direct source of damage.

The Eighth Edition printing, featuring artwork by Ron Spencer, marked the card's debut in the game's core set series. Spencer's illustration maintains the dark, macabre aesthetic typical of his work for the game, depicting a tortured figure that visually communicates the card's theme of psychological and physical suffering. As part of the transition to a modern card frame in 2003, this version updated the card's visual identity while retaining its functional role, remaining a widely recognized card within the broader history of the trading card game.
