Where it came from
Merfolk Looter first debuted in the 1999 set Mercadian Masques, designed as a foundational utility creature for blue decks. The card allows players to draw and discard, facilitating graveyard strategies and card selection. This version, appearing in The List, features the distinct, fluid illustration by Greg Staples, who captured the character's aquatic, enigmatic nature in a way that helped define the visual identity of the Merfolk tribe within the game's broader mythology.
The inclusion of this specific printing in The List—a curated selection of reprints inserted into modern-era booster packs—serves to introduce newer players to classic, functional card designs. Staples' artwork for this iteration was intended to lean into a more atmospheric and painterly aesthetic, moving away from the flatter, high-fantasy style of the late 1990s. It has been received by the community as a quintessential 'utility' staple, valued more for its reliable gameplay mechanics than its rarity.
