Merfolk Looter

Merfolk Looter debuted in the 1999 Exodus expansion and became a staple of the Magic: The Gathering card pool due to its repeatable ability to manipulate a player's hand. When the game entered its Seventh Edition in 2001, the card was reprinted with new artwork by illustrator Tristan Elwell. This release marked the first time the game utilized a new white-bordered design aesthetic for the core set, intended to clearly distinguish foundational cards from the expansion sets of the era.

Tristan Elwell’s interpretation of the creature moved away from the more whimsical or cartoony aesthetics of earlier Magic iterations, opting for a detailed, atmospheric rendering of the merfolk submerged in dark, swirling waters. The design aimed to emphasize the creature's scholarly yet secretive nature, fitting its mechanical role as a card-filtering engine. Upon its release in Seventh Edition, the card was widely received by players as a high-utility uncommon, remaining a reliable choice for deck builders who valued consistent draw manipulation.
