Where it came from
Merfolk Looter originated in the Exodus expansion of 1998, designed as a classic blue creature that allows players to draw and discard a card. Its utility as a repeatable selection engine made it a staple in limited formats and early control archetypes, representing the fundamental blue color philosophy of knowledge through exchange and preparation.
The version from Eternal Masters, released in 2016, features art by Steve Argyle. This iteration maintains the iconic theme of a scholarly aquatic creature gathering artifacts, rendered with the polished, high-definition aesthetic consistent with the premium-focused reprints of the Eternal Masters set, which sought to provide players with updated versions of historically significant cards for competitive play.
