Provenance

Where it came from

The Mesa Chicken was released in 1998 as part of Unglued, the first 'silver-bordered' expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Wizards of the Coast as a parody of traditional gameplay, the set focused on humor and experimental mechanics that broke the established rules of the trading card game. The Mesa Chicken was intended to capture the absurdity of the set, utilizing a 'chickens' creature type that played on the game's creature-type taxonomy.

The card illustration was provided by artist Brian Snoddy, whose whimsical and loose ink-wash style was a departure from the high-fantasy realism typical of the period. By depicting a literal chicken standing on a desert mesa, the art leaned into the pun-heavy, tongue-in-cheek identity that defined the Unglued project. While the set was not tournament-legal, it was warmly received by fans as a creative, lighthearted subversion of the competitive scene.
