Provenance

Where it came from

Deadhead was released in 1998 as part of the Unglued set, Wizards of the Coast's first foray into the 'un-set' concept for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a parody set, Unglued intentionally broke the standard rules of the game to prioritize humor and meta-commentary, allowing for card mechanics that could not exist in competitive play. The set was created under the direction of Mark Rosewater, who sought to challenge the rigidity of the game's design philosophy by embracing absurdity.

The illustration for Deadhead was created by artist Jeff Miracola. The artwork features a zombie-themed caricature that leans into the set's playful, irreverent tone. As a card that plays upon the physical state of the graveyard—a core mechanic of the game—it was received by the player base as a whimsical subversion of the dark, gothic aesthetic usually found in Magic's standard expansions, cementing its legacy as a piece of gaming counter-culture.
