Provenance

Where it came from

The Hive first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a rare artifact. It represents a classic era of the game when top-down design—creating a card to fit a thematic concept—was a primary focus. Its mechanic, which allows a player to create a token creature during their upkeep, was intended to provide a steady source of board presence in a game that was still defining its fundamental rules and power levels.

The illustration by Anson Maddocks captures the grotesque, organic aesthetic common to early Magic cards. Maddocks was instrumental in establishing the game's initial dark fantasy tone, using a distinct, hand-drawn style that felt more tactile and eerie than the polished digital art seen in modern sets. When The Hive was reprinted in Tenth Edition in 2007, it retained this original artwork, serving as a nostalgic bridge to the game's origins for long-time players.
